Lifecycle of a Dundas Doors and Windows Door : From Purchase to Installation

STEP 1:  After purchasing your new door our staff will visit your home to take detailed measurements of the existing door opening. This process is integral to ensure a proper fit and to confirm on-site details. It also gives us a chance to address any of your specific questions or concerns.

STEP 4: Now your door system is ready for our unique custom spray finish. During this process we paint your door, frame and trim any colour you wish, to reflect your personal taste and your home's individual style. Click here to learn more about our door painting and finishing process.
STEP 2:  Once we have confirmed the measurements our staff begins to hand-build your new door system from scratch. Specifically, we customize the frame, make cut-outs (glass, hardware), then we assemble the frame and the door panels into a unit. Click here to learn more about our unequalled door construction process. STEP 5: Once your door system has been built, prepped and painted it is almost ready for installation. However, before it is complete, we must carefully secure any glass inserts and install your choice of anti-tarnish hardware (ie. deadbolt and leverset). Click here to discover more about the hardware packages that are available.
STEP 3:  Your door system has been built, but now it must be prepared for the paint process. Any imperfections in the wood frame are poly-filled and sanded, then the frame is painted with a high quality primer. Next, the wood frame and door panel is buffed down  to achieve a smooth surface before the paint finish is applied. Finally, the entire door system is cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris. Finally, after we've completed all five phases, your door is ready to be installed.

We at Dundas Doors and Windows are proud of our unique and unparalleled manufacturing process, and It is our hope that you, as a consumer, recognize the experience, time and quality that goes into each and every one of our doors.

Anatomy of a Dundas Doors & Windows Door :  Quality, Strength, Efficiency

1. Flexible, all temperature weatherstripping blocks out wind and rain, keeps in heated or cooled air. 6. The solid wood lock block provides reinforcement in the critical lock area.
2. Thermally efficient pine frame - finger-jointed to resist warping (white vinyl frame cladding available). 7. Solid polyurethane foam core is injected between the two steel skins to fill every air space and permanently bonded to provide outstanding insulation and stability.
3. Adhesive backed, die cut sill gasket prevents water seepage between the sill and frame. 8. Continuous wood perimeter provides a thermal break between outside and inside surfaces to eliminate frost and condensation.
4. The aluminum sill is thermally broken to eliminate frost transfer. With the adjustable sweep this system provides a true barrier against water and air infiltration. 9. The multi-finned adjustable vinyl sweep and corner seals provide a positive seal that enhances insulation by keeping air and water from infiltrating. The seal also keeps pests out.
5. Hot dipped, galvanized steel skins wrapped around top & bottom edges. Double wrapped around vertical edges for rigidity. Both steel skins resist cracking, splitting, rusting, and warping. A factory primer is applied.

Building a Dundas Doors and Windows Door : From the Start

Let's face it no home is alike and no door system should be either. At Dundas Doors and Windows, we don't believe in providing an assembly line of standard door units. Instead, when our customers purchase a new door, we proceed to their home to measure the existing door opening and then use these measurements to build a door unit from scratch. Therefore, the reason we can produce exceptional quality custom-made door units is because we pre-hang all of our doors.
Pre-hanging is the most crucial part of any door system's creation, because the frame is what provides it's structure and strength. It's also the only time, during the construction process, that a door system can be customized to a home's specific door opening.
The Construction Process :
  • each and every door unit is hand built from scratch starting with the frame (pre-hanging).
  • all door units are made of strong, thermally efficient finger jointed pine framing material and a customizable thermally broken sill.
  • we customize the door frame's height, width and depth (jamb size) to satisfy the unique specifications of a customer's existing door opening.
  • metal insulated door panels are prepared, before assembly to the frame, by cutting out areas for decorative glass inserts and boring for deadbolt.
  • once the framing and door prepping is complete, we use superior quality brass hinges to assemble or "hang" the metal insulated door within the frame.
  • side panels are secured with wood glazing stops - a neat and modern method of attaching the side panels to the frame.
  • a substantial multi-finned, adjustable vinyl sweep is applied to the bottom of the door.
  • in conjunction with the sweep, weatherstripping and corner seals are installed around the perimeter of the door frame to ensure a virtual seal between the door unit and the elements.
  • our door systems are built to the proper dimensions, allowing for an easier and more effective installation; yet more importantly, increasing energy efficiency, security and peace of mind.
  • customers do not have to worry about size or measurement details.

Colours and Finish : Experience the Difference

None of the door systems at Dundas Doors and Windows are factory painted; instead, each door unit is custom sprayed with a high quality and maintenance free exterior paint finish. This process is unparalleled in the industry for two reasons: first, the finish is vastly superior (it is essentially a car finish; without the possibility of rust or corrosion) and second, it offers our customers the unique opportunity to choose the exact colour and type of finish they wish.
Features :
  • choose a paint colour from an endless rainbow of choices (for custom colours we suggest choosing from a Benjamin Moore colour swatch).
  • a high quality, durable exterior paint is used.
  • the entire door system (metal insulated panels and wood frame) is spray finished.
  • door systems are sprayed several times to achieve a high quality finish.
  • all wood trim (brickmold and interior casing) is fully primed and painted.
  • all door finishes are completely maintenance free.
  • customers never have to paint their door again.
Options :
  • split-finish (have the outside and inside of your door system painted differently to match the exterior and interior style of your home).
  • high gloss or semi-gloss finish.
  • non-paint options :
    • white vinyl capped frame (applies to single and double doors).
    • white vinyl metal insulated door, featuring a subtle wood grain texture (not available in all door panel styles).
The little things make the difference between an average door and a Dundas Doors and Windows door. Our door systems are not complete until we are satisfied with their overall look and finish.

If decorative glass is required, we ensure that the frames are fully primed and painted and, upon installing the inserts, we even manage to hide all the screw holes.

Dundas Door and Windows Security : Strength, Innovation, Peace of Mind

One of the primary reasons customers decide to upgrade a door is to increase their home's safety and security. A Dundas Doors and Windows door system offers a number of features and options that can help turn your home into a fortress.
Features :
  • a strong and durable wood frame.
  • all metal insulated doors and door panels are made of heavy-duty 24 gauge steel.
  • a solid wood block reinforces the lock area of the door, adding strength and rigidity.
  • a 1" steel deadbolt offers maximum protection.
  • all decorative glass is double or triple glazed and tempered for added safety.
Options :
  • a steel frame reinforcement (SFR), exclusive to Dundas Doors and Windows, is screwed into the door frame and runs the entire length of the latch side (locking side).
The SFR forms a solid steel barrier between the deadbolt and the frame to eliminate the frame from collapsing or splintering if severe force is applied to the door. We highly recommend the SFR for all doors, it truly maximizes your home's security.
  • a solid brass lock and door reinforcement sleeve, sandwiching the door, to help solidify the door and prevent it from breaking due to excessive force.
  • double or single cylinder deadbolt.
